The fixation is the most important step in anatomic pathology and its purpose is to preserve the architecture of the tissue, nucleic acids and cellular morphology.

The most common fixative is formalin, that is known to have carcinogenic and mutagenic properties and can act as a toxicant and skin sensitiser.
